Faithful Little Maddie
Maddie and Mema had been friends a long time. Before Macie and Maddie’s family moved away, Mema would come over and visit. Macie always hid, but Maddie wanted to stay close. Mema paid attention to Maddie. She said things like, “Oh, you’re a good little dog. Just look how cute you are!” If she rolled over on her back, Mema always rubbed her belly. Maddie was happy to see Mema. Yes, the two of them got along just fine.
By the time the family moved to Ireland, it seemed good for Maddie and Macie to live with Mema. And by the time Macie moved to heaven, Maddie and Mema had a lovely routine. Almost every day, twice a day, they walked in the neighborhood. Maddie felt very important wearing her leash and leading Mema up and down the street. Her ears were up and her eyes were wide open. She knew she had a job to do - she had to look out for Mema! And she was faithful to do it.
As long as the weather was warm, Mema let Maddie sit at the glass front door and watch everything outside. If another dog led a person up the street, Maddie was on her feet. She barked as if to say, “What are you doing? You are too close to Mema’s house! Keep away!” She didn’t stop barking until they were out of sight. She had to protect their home… and she was faithful.
The back yard was fenced, so Maddie could go there any time she wanted. All she had to do was stand at the back door and wait for Mema to let her out. If a squirrel was on the deck, Maddie raced outside as soon as the door was open. She made it clear that no squirrels were allowed while she was around!
The best part of their day was when Mema prayed for people. Sometimes she sat on the sofa next to Maddie. Sometimes she walked around the room. Maddie knew some of the names Mema whispered to God and she could tell this was important. When Mema had tears on her cheeks, Maddie knew she was okay. Mema was being faithful to do what she had to do and it touched her heart.
One day after she prayed, Mema stroked Maddie’s fur and said, “Maddie, you and I are missionaries of supply! We are doing our part, girl!” Maddie wasn’t sure what that meant, but she definitely could take care of Mema. She surely could keep on watching and protecting.
Little Maddie never quit - she was always faithful.
