Macie & Mema
“Macie, wanna go to heaven today?!” Mema asked Ashlyn’s cat. She wasn’t being mean. She was just sure the unhappy cat didn’t like her. Macie loved Ashlyn, but Ashlyn’s family had moved away.
Mema brought food to her. Macie ran and hid.
Mema left a trickle of water running in the bathroom sink. That was the only way Macie would drink.
The litter box was cleaned often. Mema made sure of that!
One thing Mema did was the very best thing to do. She gave Macie all the space she needed.
As winter came, Macie began to change. Little by little, she quit running and hiding. She finally jumped up on Mema’s lap. Of course, it was her idea. The old cat and the grandma became friends and kept each other warm that winter.
Mema grew to love the finicky little cat, but she still gave her plenty of space.
When Macie did go to heaven one day, Mema cried. Yes, she cried a whole lot. Macie’s friendship had been worth Mema’s patience and care. Some things just take time.
Now Mema and a little dog named Maddie had the whole house to themselves. But that’s a story for another day.
